Fishing Report for August 7th, 2008!

The Fishing Report that goes to all readers and anglers and I hope to future anglers.

Thanks to all of my anglers for being patient. I am back on the water, yes, its true, with the healing of my rib injury, I am back.

The weather for Summer, has been just like Summer, very hot days in the low 90's, and water temperatures in the low 80's, just like bath water.

But, since its Summer, that is what we expect every season.

It has been hot with winds out of the East, Southeast and in the lower 90's, its and oven out there, and like to remind all anglers to make sure they hydrate and bring good sunblock with them, for the water acts like a mirror and sunburns are not fun when your on vacation.

We have finally got a bit a rain here last night and today, which is much needed, but, I don't like to have that for the anglers.

The fishing has been fantastic early in the mornings, and late in the evenings for the tarpon bite.

On fly the tarpon have been sighted and caught and released oceanside on the sand patches, and the bonefish was superb last week, and tails were every where, unfortuately, my anglers could not get close enough to them, they were on a trek for feeding and moving off the flats very quickly. The casts that we had, put us in less than 6" of water, and they too pushed off the flat, the water was running out fast, but we tried.

The tarpon bite has been better in the later part of night time, biting on dead mullet, crabs and pilchards.

Backcountry fishing has been good with reports of alot of redfish, trout, big sharks, and snook, and some shots at some permit a bit closer into the park.

Flamingo has no gas, so make sure your guides have an extra gas can aboard for that run way back there, there is no gas at Flamingo yet, they are still cleaning up from the spill they had over there, and should have gas in the next few weeks we hope.

The offshore for the anglers are enjoying the sailfishing, yellowtail, dolphin, fishing. Along with tuna, kingfish, and cobia.

Summer fishing is going off like a hitch, I cannot believe it is already August, and Fall is around the corner, and what a blast we are going on to have in all areas of fishing from bonefishing, and most of all the tarpon season is going to slow down a bit, and the backcountry fishing has been great with catches and releases of redfish, trout, snook, lots of sharks, and permit, and snapper, all kind of rod benders.

I would like to congratulate Rocky and Gerritt on some great fishing with nailing a 130lb tarpon on a night bite out of Papa Joes Marina, and nailing some big sharks and jewfish with some power housing on those big brutes. We had some shots at a few bonefish groups, and tailing bonefish, but they were moving fast on the falling tide and unfortuately could not get to them with the light tackle line. The were on an adventure all there own.

Also, I would like to congratulate Jim Ha and his son Andrew who was a pleasure to fish with. Jim won photo of the week with our local newspaper with a 40lb permit caught in Islamorada. He won a free dinner for 2 and we had a little write up in the paper. You can view it for yourself in my scrapbook on the homepage, or you can go to the site at www.weeklyfisherman.net, and schroll to the issue on July 17th, 2008, and go to page 3 and page 19 on the bottom right hand corner for the write up.

His son Andrew took the pictures and he too did a great job we had a school of bonefish, which was a bit difficult to see for them, but, they did have some shots, but again, those elusive fish are fast and furious once you miss the shot, as I always say, you only get one or two shots if your lucky with those gray ghosts, but Andrew did catch several nice size bonnethead sharks, one weighed in at 12lbs. Great Job Guys, and hope to see all of you back next season.

Also we just go over mini-lobster season. It was pretty busy here, and had a few divers pass, and season opened on the 6th of August. So,to all you divers and snorkelers, please have the right equipment and flags, and don't dive or snorkel where there is alot of boat traffic, and always have a buddy with you, and be alert at all times for legal size lobsters, and again, be careful on the water with boats, jetskis, and make sure you have the correct size flags for your boats.

Good luck, and good eating.

What a way to start out Summer and look forward to the Fall Fishing. But, now lets keep in Fall and Winter mind, that nd Summer is here and anglers from all over are calling for trips and dates for the 2009 season, and the dates are getting full and limited, so make sure you call well in advance for your trips, we want you to get the days you want to fish, but if I get overbooked, I can always try to set you up with other guides, and try to put you in for an afternoon trip or evening trip if available.

In Everglades National Park the snook season opened on March 1st, not Feb 1st, the Feb 1st season is only for the Atlantic side, the park has changed the opening to March 1st. Snook season is closed May, June, July, and August for the Park, and for Atlantic Coast June-August.

So, get your gear ready and there have been reports of some large snook.

The Park is exploding with alot of snook and redfish being caught and released and some taken back for dinner. But, the season reopens will reopen September 1st.

Also, I want to make perfectly clear to all my readers and anglers that I am no longer affiliated with the marina. If you call there, you will be told I am no longer there, and how can they help you to set you up with one of their guides that are slow, and/or be told I am out of business, or am not fishing no longer, Not True!!

You and I and your party will definitely will not be far off the waters of Islamorada. Again, I am back to work, and ready for my anglers to be back on the bow of my boat searching and stalking any and all saltwater species they would like to go for.

So, please again direct all your phone calls to Capt. Ann Holahan, so your not placed with another guide or told I am out of business, and not rightly given my phone number to contact me, so you can reach me a at 305-664-5891, or 305-664-5793, and you an email me directly at captann@boneranger.com, and aquaint yourself with my website at www.boneranger.com.

Don't mean to reiterate, but Make sure all you anglers coming to the Keys to visit and to fish, especially for the our young visitors and fisherman, have plenty of sunblock, and lots of water and gatorade to replace those lost electrolites we loose through the extensive heat. Most important, don't forget those hats, and breathable clothing so you can stay as cool and comfortable as the temps rise up.

I have to say, this has been an auspicious Winter and Spring here in the Florida Keys. I don't remember it being so hot, but I think every season we all say it is hotter than last year.

There are reports that there are tarpon around the bridges and channels, and taking some great bites on mullet, and pilchards, and pinfish, also the tarpon around the main channels and deep holes out in Everglades National Park, but the bite has still been a bit sporadic, we still have a few residentials around oceanside taking some small crabs, Doa's and had a few hits on the Burkley Gulp shrimp.

The water temperatures have warmed up into the mid-80's it feels like a bath, but again the best bite will be early morning, and late evening hook ups.

Bonefishing has been spectacular this month, all over the place on bayside and oceanside, this has been one of the best months for those screaming reels, and elsuive bonefish, and the bite is getting better everyday, and anglers are catching and releasing some big fish on light tackle and on fly, although flyfishing is tough, they have been nailing the big ones. Also, the bonefishing has been especially good in the late afternoon, and the best bite on shrimp, our Spring shrimp has been alot to be desired on somedays, and now with Summer being here, there will be little or no shrimp, so make sure you use those days to your advantage with flyfishing or dead baits or even small crabs, they are not too fussy, they are opportunistic, and they will eat pretty much what you will toss ahead of them. but we are getting some nice size live bait shrimp, when they are not too big, we can always use but quarter size crabs or DOA crabs have presented to be a great bite for the bonefish, but the best tip, of course on light tackle, is the shrimp, and make sure you go when the bite has been great in the early morning and evening just before sunset.

Remember also, if you have a bonefish on don't horse the fish, let him take the line, and make sure you put your rod in the air as high as you can get it, or you will end up reeling against the drag and lose the catch you long waited for. Then slowly reel the rod tip up and reel down, and repeat as your guide directs you.

The water in Florida Bay is still very warm, and the bite there too has been a great. Although, you are still looking and trying to find the muds for trout, jack crevelle, snapper, redfish, snook and sharks.

Needless to say, the fishing has been fair to good, but everyday is different here in the Keys, on the flats and backcountry.

Season for lobstering opens August 6th. So, bring your tickle sticks, and measuring devices. It is a great way to enjoy a day on the water, and of course, dinner.

Also, don't forget Snook season is closed, it reopens September 1st, on the Atlantic side, but has opened in the park on May 1st, just want to let you all know of the change, and if you need to check out the closed seasons, go to my homepage, and you will see the link for the Wildlife Conservation for all information needed.

I expect the snook season to be productive with some great fights and bites whether on fly or light tackle, make sure you get your gear and baits ready for these true bruisers and stay within the regulation limits. Stone Crab season is also open, so don't forget to go to your favorite restaurants and have some great crab either hot or cold, and that will leave you wanting more. But closes May 16-Oct. 14th, 2008.

Don't forget the next season tarpon trips for the 2009 season, and is a real experience and a great idea for those looking for some great fights, and to experience the shuttle launching off with these beautiful fish, and what a rush to get one on fly or live bait. Also, it gives you all a chence to see our beautiful sunsets for the wives, or girlfriends, or even for the diehard fisherman that want to duke it out with those expolsive and beautiful fish.

Bonefishing Tournaments will start in Mid-September for you bonefish enthusiasts. So, any anglers interested in upcoming events. Please email me, or give me a call at 305-664-5891, and I will give you all the information your looking for.

I hope all my Readers and Anglers have had a Great Time Fishing and Had Some Tight lines.

But, I want to let everyone know we all had a good time and enjoyed having each and everyone of you all aboard my skiff, and hope to see you all come back fishing.

Every year, I keep saying time surely does fly by and can you believe it, Spring fishing is over, and Fall and Winter fishing is right around the corner, and what a variety of fishing we will all have. So, please don't wait till the last minute to get your bookings in, days do fill up, and I want to give everyone the experience and dates they would like to enjoy the fishing, and even the beautiful birds, dolphin, and islands here in the Keys.

Don't forget to book in advance for any trips you will like to do with the family, spouses, kids, or with your friends, we can set you up with extra boats for bachelor parties, corporate tournaments, family get togethers, friendly fishing tournaments, and most of all, just lots of fun with each other, and the ones you love.
